Tzedakah Organizations We Support
MAZON allocates donations from the Jewish community to prevent and
alleviate hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds.
The Ziv Tzedakah Fund is an exciting and unusual non-profit
organization that is dedicated to the collection and distribution of funds
to various little-known Tzedakah projects (we define “Tzedakah” as
pure, decent caring or, simply put, “just doing the right thing”.) Based
upon Jewish tradition, Ziv funds both Jewish and non-Jewish
programs.
The Save Darfur Coalition's mission is to raise public awareness about
the ongoing genocide in Darfur and to mobilize a unified response to
the atrocities that threaten the lives of two million people in the Darfur
region.
The Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life is the leading Jewish
environmental organization in the United States. Since its founding in
1993, COEJL has helped tens of thousands of Jews make a connection
between Judaism and the environment. COEJL has put environmental
protection on the agenda of the organized Jewish community and
made the case to elected officials and decision-makers that protecting
the environment is a moral and religious obligation
Heifer International works with communities to end hunger and poverty
and to care for the earth. The simple idea of giving families a source of
food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over
60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given
the gifts of self-reliance and hope

The AIDS Resource Foundation for Children was founded in 1985 in
order to meet the unique needs of families and children living with
HIV/AIDS. The ARFC consistently broadens and focuses services in
order to address the changing difficulties associated with the disease
in New Jersey. After opening the first home in the country for babies
with AIDS in 1987, the agency now provides a full array of
comprehensive services for HIV-affected families and medically fragile
children in Jersey City, Elizabeth, Newark, and Neptune, NJ.

I support the Brackett Foundation because they are a small non-profit
that is run on a shoe string and uses all of their donations for their
cause. This is how they explain their mission:
Tom and Liz Brackett started the Brackett Foundation in 1997 to
support the education of ethnic minorities who have fled from their
homes during the 50-year war in Burma. For those displaced persons,
who make their homes in remote refugee villages in the forested hills
of Thailand and India, education is their best hope to sustain their
heritage and rebuild their society.
Tom and Liz and their 5 fellow trustees personally fund all of the
Foundation's travel and administrative costs. So every dollar given by
any other contributor to the Foundation is spent entirely on the
education of the refugees: providing scholarships, funding schools,
underwriting teachers' salaries, and meeting basic educational needs."
I know about this foundation, based in Hamilton NY, through a long time
mutual friend who teaches with them at Colgate U.

Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses
in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can
"sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great
strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the
loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from
the business you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan
money back.

Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing
malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. While the UN Foundation has
been working with the UN to fight malaria for years, it was a column that
Rick Reilly wrote about malaria in Sports Illustrated, challenging each of
his readers to donate at least $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed
nets -- and the incredible response from thousands of Americans across
the country -- that led to the creation the Nothing But Nets campaign.
For a billion people in the developing world, drinking water is sludge that
contains animal waste, mud, parasites, and all manner of dangerous
elements. Every year, diseases from such water cause diarrheal
illnesses that kill 1.8 million children, 4000 a day – more than malaria
and HIV combined.
Enter PUR, a powder made by Proctor & Gamble. Pour one 10 cent
packet of PUR into 10 liters of contaminated water and you will see
sludge become crystal clear, safe, drinkable water. P&G and a
network of organizations have joined together to form the Children’s
Safe Drinking Water program. CSDW brings PUR to developing
countries desperately in need of clean drinking water.

There was a growing awareness that there were many families,
especially senior citizens, who needed assistance in securing food and
for longer periods of time than was currently offered. It was also noted
that a centralized location was necessary, since many of those in need
did not have transportation.
The group decided to consolidate their programs and work together out
of one central distribution center in Morristown. They then reached out
to seek the community's help in maintaining and staffing the project.
The Interfaith Food Pantry is a non-denominational, non-profit 501 (C) (3)
organization helping families make ends meet by supplementing their
monthly groceries in times of need.
